Subject: [*] Default Folder 2.30
Please add this control panel to the archives. It replaces defaultd-222.hqx.
Default Folder is a shareware control panel that lets you "link" a default
folder to any application or desk accessory. When you launch a desk
accessory or a linked application by itself (ie. not by double clicking on
a document), Default Folder sets things up so the file dialog boxes
initially open in your default folder.
Default Folder can also provide pop-up menus in the file dialog box to
allow you to switch between folders and between volumes. The folder menu
allows access to:
1) The current application or desk accessory's default folder.
2) Any one of the last 10 folders you used.
3) One of a reserved set of folders "locked" in the menu.
The volume menu allows instant switching to any available volume. It also
provides "smart volume switching." Default Folder remembers the last
folder you accessed on each volume, and switches to that folder rather than
to the top of the folder hierarchy when you change disks. This works with
both the volume menu and the "Drive" button.

Subject: [*] double-scroll-202.hqx
This is DoubleScroll 2.0.2. It fixes many bugs in 1.1.3 and
1.1.4, and includes many new features besides. See the docs
below. Note that I am not the author, just a satisfied user.
(From the docs...)
What is DoubleScroll?
=====================
DoubleScroll 2.0 is a combination Extension/Control Panel which
alters the way your Macintosh scroll bars look and act. Basically
it puts a double arrow on each end of your scroll bars, allowing
you to scroll in both directions without having to move your mouse
>From one end of your desk to the other to scroll back and forth.
It works only with System 7, and is designed to take advantage of
the color scheme of the System 7 interface.
Though the idea of double-arrowed scroll bars is not new, I de-
cided to give it a new twist with System 7 and make them look
identical to the standard scroll bars when displaying in color
as well as black and white. They look like genuine Apple-issued
scroll bars. So they'll blend right in with the rest of your
interface without standing out and looking odd. If you change
the color scheme of your windows with the "Color" Control Panel
that comes with System 7, the scroll bars will change with the
rest of your decor! These are scroll bars the way nature in-
tended (and I feel Apple should implement).
When space starts to get tight, you will notice that the scroll
bars will lose their double nature and revert to the normal way
of doing business, just to give the thumb (the little box) a
little breathing space. You can set the distance at which the
scroll bars revert to single arrows in the Control Panel if you
don't like the default setting of 160 pixels.
Option-clicking the arrows will act as a page up/page down.
This saves even more mouse movement. Instead of moving your
mouse up to the top of a scroll bar (let's say the thumb is
near the top) to page up, you could just option-click!
Command-clicking the arrows will act as a home/end feature.
This means if you command-click the up arrow, you will immedi-
ately jump to the beginning of your document, and if you command-
click the down arrows, you will immediately jump to the end of
your document.
In version 2.0, DoubleScroll also has an option to let you scroll
the contents of a window while you are dragging the thumb along.
This is useful if you have a very long document that you need to
scroll from top to bottom, or vice versa. Holding the option key
while dragging will temporarily toggle this option; i.e. if the
option is off, the option key would turn it on and vice-versa.
DoubleScroll 2.0 also allows you to change the scrolling speed
and the scrolling delay. These settings are analogous to keyboard
repeat rate and delay, respectively. These setting could be a
blessing if you own a fast CPU such as a Quadra which can scroll
really fast, possible faster than you would like. You could slow
the scrolling speed down so you could actually see the text as
it's scrolling, instead of a big blur.
All changes made to DoubleScroll in the control panel take effect
immediately after closing it. This can be helpful if you want
to adjust the scrolling speed or add an application to the incom-
patible application list (see "Working the Control Panel") or even
turn DoubleScroll off completely!
DoubleScroll also supports balloon help, so if you feel like play-
ing around, knock yourself out!
DoubleScroll is a shareware product. You may try it out for 15
days. If you like it, please send me $10 per copy and I'll send
you a registration code to register your copy(ies). If you do
not register it within 15 days, reminder messages will be dis-
played when you start up.
What's new in DoubleScroll 2.0?
===============================
DoubleScroll 2.0 is quite different from the previous versions
released. A lot of the changes made were made internally to try
and avoid certain problems that were arising and also to rely
more on new System 7 routines. A few other interesting changes
are as follows:
o 24-bit color handling and support for multiple monitors is
greatly improved.
o Any changes made in the DoubleScroll control panel take effect
immediately after closing the control panel. The only time you
will normally have to reboot is when DS did not load at startup.
If you turn DS off, any windows which are currently using the
double arrow scroll bars will continue to use them, but each new
window opened will have the regular Apple (vanilla) flavor.
o By checking off the "Scroll while dragging thumb" option, you
can do just that -- have the contents of the window scroll while
you are dragging the thumb. Holding down the option key while
dragging the thumb will temporarily toggle this option. So if the
option is off the option key would turn it on and vice-versa.
This option is on by default.
o DoubleScroll has a scrolling speed setting so you can adjust
the scrolling speed to best suit your needs.
o There is now an option to use a 3D button effect when clicking
the scroll bar arrows. This option is on by default.
o You can now print the order form directly from DS. Just push
the button below marked "Print Order Form..." and you will be
asked for your name and address, as well as a couple of other
questions. From there, you can print the order form with all your
information already pre-entered for you! You can also print the
order form from the registration dialog box.
o You can also print this documentation from the control panel
by clicking on the "Print Docs..." button in the "Info" dialog box.
o Command-clicking the arrows acts like a home/end function.

Subject: [*] Edit II 2.1.3 SEA
Edit II is intended as a replacement for the Consulair Edit text editor but
which alllows the use of the cursor keys on the Mac keyboard for
navigation. If the extended keyboard is used, then the num lock LED will
indicate whether the cursor pad or the numeric pad mode is on. The home,
end, page up, page down keys will also work, as will the delete right key.
One level of undo is supported. You can launch Edit II by double clicking
old Edit files (since Edit II uses the same creator signature as Edit, that
is, EDIT). Stationery documents are supported under System 7.
Thanks for all the support from registered users. Your feedback has been
incorporated into this version.
2.1.3 (02/28/93) Maintenance Release

* No changes in documentation from 2.1.1 (except for the registration page)
* Removed code which stores $FFFFFFFF in location 0 to trap references to
that location.
2.1.2 (02/14/93) Maintenance Release
~~~~~
* No changes in documentation from 2.1.1 (except for the registration page)
** Bugs fixed **
* Files now properly closed when windows are dismissed (should eliminate
'file busy, can't empty trash' problems).
This is GIFConverter 2.3.1. Display any GIF, JPEG, TIFF, RIFF,
MacPaint, Thunderscan, Startupscreen, RLE, or PICT (even compressed!)
file on any Macintosh just by downloading this file! Uses color
QuickDraw on color Macintoshes. GIFConverter is SHAREWARE, $40 plus S&H
($5 US+Canada, $10 international).
GIFConverter 2.3.1 fixes some bugs and adds support for JPEG/JFIF
files without requiring QuickTime (QuickTime still required for
compressed PICTs).
Bugs fixed for 2.3.1: Uses required AppleEvents; drag-and-drop works
better. New bar-type progress window. Compressed TIFF output with
prediction. TIFF fixes for Microsoft Word. Fixed some bugs losing colors
when saving files. Recognizes file types better. Reads ISO 9660 disks
better. Fixed halftoning problems in EPSF output.
GIFConverter can do scaling by percentage, higher resolution (144 or
288 dpi) pictures, and true halftones on 300 or 360 dpi QuickDraw
printers such as the HP DeskWriter and non-Postscript laser printers.
You can print on any Macintosh printer (halftones on LaserWriter,
color on ImageWriter II or any color PostScript printer and the
LaserWriter 6.0+ driver (when Apple gets it to work) or many other color
printers), or save to any of these file formats plus EPSF! Every feature
is fully implemented, so you can test GIFConverter with your complete
system!
Subject: [*] HPopupMenu XFCN 3.1.2
A couple more bug fixes were added this time. Notably a crasher on 68000s
when changing the font, the restoration of command keys (people yelled when
I took them out), and the itemDelimiter wasn't defaulting to a comma on
versions of Hypercard which didn't support the itemDelimter property (notably
version 2.0). These have all been fixed.
HPopupMenu allows you to make popup menus in Hypercard from buttons or
fields.
These menus can be in any font or size and can be hierarchical or not. You
can use all the standard meta-characters to create menus with icons or styled
text. You can even use color icons or SICN resources. This is by far the
most powerful popup menu XFCN in existence.
It is free for noncommercial use and has a very reasonable commercial
license.
who do not have FB and might be interested in moving up to FutureBASIC.
(After all, QB appears to have been orphaned.) The converter does a
good but incomplete job; in most programs it will leave things which
must be attended to manually. The biggest difficulty will be for programmers
who do not have a central event loop, which QB examples did not stress.
This is Version 1.4 of this report and should replace mac-ibm-compare131.txt.
It contains some important changes, additions and clarifications. Due to the
rapid changes in computers I am therefore very much on the lookout for
contributions from Digest and other readers to flesh out, correct or point out
confusing parts of the report. Send comments and information to CompuServe:
72130,3557; AOL: BruceG6069; or Internet: bgrubb@dante.nmsu.edu. This report
covers not only present hardware/software statistics and features but also
future possibilities. Despite its condenced and generized format it still
provides some thought-provoking reading on the relative merits, problems, and
deficiencies of Macs and IBM PCs. Here is part of the preamble for your
prerusal:
"The reason for this general data sheet is that people in both camps are not
clear or accurate about what they are saying about their machines and what
little accurate info is out there is unconsolidated. This sheet will try to
consolidate and condence the information out there. Since computer technology
is always changing there are always going to be points in which the sheet will
be lacking or incorrect on information. So, please just don't say the sheet
is incomplete or incorrect but also give me clear and concise information to
make the needed corrections.
To keep this data sheet organized please provide, if possible, article
citations for the information provided or corrected and keep the opinions to
a minimum. As this is a general data sheet, keep the info provided simple so
I can understand what is being talked about and can explain it to others.
Also keep the information relevant to the section corrected. Thank you."
What's new in version 2.1.1:
Question 1.1: Why is my system taking up so much memory?
I've corrected the cross-reference to the info about reinstalling
the system software. The assertion in earlier releases that a
Mac II required a PMMU to use 32-bit addressing and more than
eight megabytes of RAM was incorrect. Contrary to misinformation
in earlier versions of this FAQ The Mac II can use up to
sixty-eight megs of real RAM without a PMMU. Bank A can only use
one-meg SIMMs but Bank B can use larger sizes. Virtual memory does,
however, require a PMMU. I've added info about the 32-bit enabler
for System 7.1.
Question 1.2: What is MODE32? the 32-bit 7.1 enabler? Do I need them?
I've added info about the 32-bit enabler for System 7.1.
Question 4.3: Easy Access: One Answer, Many Questions
I've added some additional "symptoms" and uses of Easy Access.
Hi,
Patch Loader
Overview
The Patch Loader is a small INIT core I've written for people who are writing
their own INIT's. It will load and install resources as trap patches.
History
This is really a spin off from other INIT/CDEV's I've written. I didn't
really want to leave the install code in memory. This meant a separate INIT
that loaded code into memory and then patched it into the appropriate traps
before quitting. After rewriting this code 3 times for different traps etc, I
decided to make it portable. This is the result.
This stack is "e-mail ware." It stack was created over a period of about
as the need arose. It has helped Christopher learn his "ABC's" when he was
about two and a half. It helped him memorize several phone numbers
This stack consists of 5 simple cards (but uses a lot of sounds, thus its
Subject: [*] RevRdist 1.4.0.8
RevRdist 1.4.0.8
After a few questions recently about restoring configurations/cleaning
up hard drives on workstations, I've decided to post RevRdist to sumex.
Here's a short blurb from the RevRdist docs, describing what it does:
"The intended environment for RevRdist is a group of Macintosh
workstations, each with a local hard disk, connected to an
AppleShare server. The server maintains the 'master' copies
of folders and files. Client workstations have local copies
of (a subset of) these files, as well as additional files which
may be unique to the workstation. RevRdist compares the client
copies of folders and files against the master copies. Then,
based on options and criteria specified in a distribution control
file, RevRdist does the following:
* Discards some unwanted files/folders from the client.
* Moves other files/folders to a "junk" folder on the client,
from which they are discarded later.
* Copies files/folders from the server to the client.
* Makes client files/folders invisible from the Finder.
* Sets the Finder window positions of client files/folders
to match those of the master copies on the server.
Actions can be specified explicitly for individual files or folders
and default actions can be set on a per folder basis for contents of
folders which have no explicit action."
This is an extremely handy utility, which we're using here at Cornell.
Hope you like it!
Subject: [*] Tonto
Tonto
While I was downloading the newest version of RevRdist from cc.purdue.edu, I
noticed this utility. Here's an excerpt from the README file:
Tonto provides a way to hide applications from the casual user. You
configure a copy of Tonto for each application you wish to hide and
then you make the application invisible (using ResEdit, for example).
Tonto itself remains visible, with the application's icon. You rename
each copy of Tonto to match its original application's name. If the
original application is in the same folder as Tonto, you will need to
change Tonto's name slightly. For example, if the application were
"Microsoft Word", you might rename Tonto to "Microsoft Word 4.0".
If the user double-clicks on Tonto, it does nothing but launch the
original application. If the user double-clicks on a document from the
application, the Finder launches the invisible application directly,
without using Tonto.
Tonto was written by Greg Coleman and greatly modified by Dale Talcott.
Tonto and its sources are dedicated to the public domain.
For more information, email to Dale Talcott, aeh@cc.purdue.edu.
There was no version number on it, but it looked like it could be useful
to many, especially in a lab environment. Enjoy!
second click. I have been able to discern no pattern. I remember it
occurring in Excel, Word, BBEdit, Panorama, Tex-Edit, ... I haven't tried
Subject: (Q) still, can't find applications under system 7.1
Last week I posted a note asking for help with a problem launching
applications by double-clicking on a document file. Some people
(thanks!) suggested to rebuild the desktop file *from scratch* (as
opposed to rebulding it with command-option) using a utility called
reset-dtdb, which I found on sumex.
I tried to use this reset-dtdb but unfortunately it didn't
help. It's really weird. This is what I tried (chronology is
important!):
- used reset-dtdb and desktop was rebuilt (mac rebooted)
- tried to double click on document file created by teachtext, and got
the "application not found" message
- started the application directly, opened a document from within the
application and closed the application. So far so good.
- tried again to double click on a teachtext document from the finder
and this time the application *did* start.
- ok, so maybe things are working, you say? Wrong! I then tried to
double click on a word document: same problem, application not found.
All right, I know how to fix this (so I thought, at least): opened
word directly, opened file, closed application.
- At this point double clicking on the same word document as before
works just fine, BUT, get this, now the teachtext files *cannot* be
launched by double-clicking again. It's a sort of race condition!!!
- I tried the same cycle with superpaint files, works files, and
macdraw files, with the same results. I can fix one class of files,
while breaking the others.
Would anybody have any clue on what's going on????? Btw, this is on a
MacSE with system 7.1 installed. I'm ready to go back to 7.0...
Is there anybody at Apple that I can call? After all I did have to pay
for this privilege!
Thanks a lot
When my system boots up, I get a happy mac, then my screen goes black, I get
another happy mac, and then welcome to macintosh. After this, the drives are
accessed and the menu bar appears but I get a watch icon, that doesn't spin
and the desktop never appears, the mac just sits there. Trying to force quit
doesn't work, the box comes up and the button highlights, but nothing else
happens.
Mode 32 used to do the happy, blank, happy thing, and it was slow, but it
worked this doesn't even hint at working. Do any of the apple people out there
have any ideas, this is after all supposed to work *better* than mode32.
I also called the apple 1800 number for system 7.1 support, and this even
had them stumped.
Subject: 7.1 Communication Problems
I have encountered a problem with high-speed communication between my SE
and my V.32bis modem under System 7.1. I have been running the serial
port to my modem at 57,600 bps with no problem under 6.0.8. I let the
modem match speed with the other end and then buffer the differences
(yes, I have a hardware-handshake cable).
When I upgraded to 7.1 on my SE, I started experiencing lost characters,
even on MNP connections! Kermit file transfers were almost impossible; I
would experience as many rejected packets as accepted ones, sometimes
more! When I dropped the speed of the serial port back to 9600, the
problems stopped!
Apple has a "hardware system update" for 7.1, for a specific group of
systems (all bigger than mine), that is intended to address just such a
problem. Out of curiosity, I tried to put the update on my system, and
got nowhere, real fast! The Installer quit. I don't recall the error,
I just assumed that it was looking for something bigger than my 68000
engine.
It appears to me that complaints of 7.1 slowness are justified. I intend
to call Apple technical support about this.
Subject: AppleTalk Zone Naming [Q]
hi
I'm new to this thing but someone probably can help me.
Our setup is as follow
One new (!) Mac IIci under 7.0 TuneUp
One old Mac SE under 6.0.8
One Sun server running CAP's "Aufs AppleShare Server"
(I've just set it up and it's working :-))
These 3 machines beeing connected by AppleTalk on Ethernet
using (for the Macs) Asante cards.
I know next to nothing about AppleTalk/AppleShare so
the question is: How one define AppleTalk Zones ??
I would like to define a Zone with a name
different from "Default Zone",
-- How can I do it ??
-- Then how can I tell the Macs that they belong to this
new zone (double clicking on the EtherTalk Icon in the Network CDEV
should do) ??
-- Trickier: how can I tell the CAP server that it belongs to
this new zone (running aarpd ie0 "new_zone_name" maybe) ??
Thanks in advance to any answer, pointer to information etc..
Subject: astute netters......
Hi Netters,
just wondering if anyone ever run an analyses on the
(Q)uestion / (A)nswer ratio in correlation to the geographic location?
This could give a list like this:
(Q)/(A)
a-country 2.3
b-country 1.9
c-city .7
...
It would be interesting to see if the number of questions asked by
netters versus the number of answers given is similar in various
locations (states, countries...) With this data it would be possible
to establish a world map showing where the most astute netters are
located. This would be a quantitative analyses only as it would be
difficult to establish quality filters for the questions and answers.
(an intelligent question may outweigh three commonplace answers)
For understandable reasons I did not write (Q) in the subject line..;-)
Let me know your thoughts.
I've now actually seen the Centris-610, and its quite a pretty machine. And
clearly its quite fast according to the benchmarks published here and
elsewhere.
I am trying to decide between the Centris-610 or the LC-III with a cheap
Sony 16" monitor as a general purpose Mac, and Mac-X terminal on ethernet.
Pity about the lack of the Centris-610 fpu. The 68LC040 chip does seem to be
socketed, and could I suppose be replaced by the full 68040, but at what cost
?
On the other hand, the 68040 only uses the fpu for simple floating point
operations (multiply, divide etc). Transcendental functions (sin, exp etc)
use the cpu, so the lack of an fpu is not quite so bad on the 040 as on the
030.
The main problem is that some applications won't even run if they don't find
an fpu. It really is a pain for the programmer to worry all the time about
whether the Mac has/hasnot an FPU. Why doesn't Apple, or more likely some
enterprising hacker, write a software fpu extension, such as the
'pseudo-fpu'
that works for the 020/030? This would trap 040-fpu mult and divide calls
and root them through SANE, as if the application was compiled to do it that
way.
Ricky, there are no stupid questions. Just wise-ass answers. I've said
it before, folks. Please don't be shy about asking questions. The most
humble of us can contribute, and the most sophisticated of us can learn.
Granted, some of us get major bored with seeing a question that was
answered in yesterday's IM Digest. That's our problem. Please put up with
us. We are not all teachers. My wife will be disgustingly eager to tell
anyone that the world's greatest gift to teaching was my going into
administration.
No, I don't believe that *any* postscript font is useful on a device like
a StyleWriter. However, if you have only TrueType fonts installed on your
Mac, you should get identical results whether you go to a PostScript or
to a QuickDraw printer. Doesn't matter if it is a laser or a jet printer.
Lots of laser printers aren't PostScript.
I'm perhaps odder than most in keeping only TrueType fonts in my Mac. And
only those fonts that're built into my LaserWriter. The system is smart
enough to know what is built into my LaserWriter and uses the built-in
PostScript Type 1 fonts for printing. Were I to get a lobotomy and replace
my PostScript LaserWriter with a QuickDraw device, those fonts would print
identically. Lots slower.
AFM is Adobe Font Metrics. Do you mean ATM -- Adobe Type Manager? Let one
of the font gurus answer that one. I don't mess with it. I like simple.
Subject: Free Adobe Type Manager and Fonts Offer
The "Read Me" file that came with System 7.1 on my new LC III contains the
following offer from Adobe for a (nearly) free copy of ATM and some fonts. I
called to order and asked the representative if there were any requirements
(such as having just bought a new system) to qualify for this offer. She said
no - anyone who knew the phone number and extension could take advantage of
this offer. I guess Adobe is trying to gain a little market share - I wonder
if they counted on this info being passed out electronically! The following
is
a copy of the text from the pertinent portion of the file:
======== Start of Read Me file section ========
A Gift to You from Adobe
Adobe Systems is pleased to offer Apple computer owners a free copy of
award-winning Adobe Type Manager (ATM) software.
With ATM, you'll gain access to thousands of PostScript Type 1 fonts for use
on
screen. Plus, ATM software can be used with all Macintosh-supported printers,
including the ImageWriter, StyleWriter, LaserWriter, and PostScript
typesetters.
As a special bonus, you'll also receive four free typefaces from the Adobe
Garamond family. These Adobe Originals are a fresh treatment of some of the
most popular typefaces in history.
Take advantage of this incredible offer today! Order the latest release of
ATM
- plus the Adobe Garamond typefaces - and pay just a $7.50 shipping and
handling charge ($30 outside the USA and Canada). Together, these products
normally retail for $346!
U.S. and Canadian residents, call
1-800-521-1976 ext. 4400, or fax 1-303-792-2231
Outside the U.S. and Canada, call
(303) 799-4000 ext. 4600.
Fax requests please include name, shipping address, daytime phone and credit
card information. Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery. Outside the U.S. and
Canada, you may either take advantage of this $30 offer for the
English-language version of ATM shipped via courier, or see below for other
offers that may be available in your country.
======== End of Read Me file section ========
No other offers were present in my copy of the file - perhaps the file shipped
with systems in other countries has more. By the way, the representative said
this is all backordered, so it really will be at least 6-8 weeks. Enjoy!
We have Freedom of Press (FOP) Light 3.0.1 (which is not quite the latest). An
update to our version is supposed to be able to deal with System 7 having the
printer drivers in the Extension Folder. A workaround was to put aliases of
the
printer drivers into the System Folder.
You won't need the full version of FOP. The difference is that with FOP Light
you don't get look-alikes of Palatino, New Century Schoolbook, Avant Garde,
Helvetica Narrow, Bookman, Zapf Chancery and Zapf Dingbats, in short, what's
included in the Adobe Plus Pack. FOP Light does have fonts similar to Times,
Helvetica and Courier and has a Symbol font. I try to use only Adobe
Postscript
Type 1 fonts anyway. So I use the outline fonts from the ATM disk and the
Adobe
Plus Pack. FOP deals with Adobe Type 1 fonts quite nicely.
Another difference between the full version of FOP and the light one is that
the
full version has as far as I can tell from the advertisements a much larger
number of printer drivers. Those are printer drivers for printers that would
be
connected to the serial port and are used exclusively by FOP. If you have a
chooser-type QuickDraw printer driver, tell FOP to use QuickDraw instead. Then
FOP becomes device independent. Therefore with a Apple Personal LaserWriter LS
you won't need the full version.
I have one misgiving about FOP, though. And that is the way it draws Bezier
curves. A comparison of output from a Apple LaserWriter and FOP on a HP
DeskWriter showed that the stroke width of the a 0.5 pt-width Bezier curve
drawn
with Adobe Illustrator wasn't nearly as uniform on the FOP printout as it was
on
the LaserWriter printout. This is something that might have been fixed by
now.
If you get a chance to try out FOP before buying it check for that problem.
Hi Netters!
I want to know if anyone on the net has experience with optical
mice for the Macintosh. MacWarehouse offers in Germany two of
them, both from the Mouse Systems:
- A+, simply replacing the original Apple Mouse with one button.
- A3, a similar mouse, but with three progammable buttons.
Because the original Apple mouse has only one button, I am also
interested if it is worth to spend the extra money for the three
button version. Any comments are appreciated.
Subject: PB100 Power Problem
I've been having a problem with my PB100 recently. I can't seem to keep
a charge in the battery. Ok, from the beginning, I bought the thing in
October, so it's still in warranty (kind of). In December, I added a
6MB SIMM to boost it to eight. Then, about a month ago, I put in an
APS 2400 FAX modem. For the last two weeks, I haven't been able to hold
a charge in the battery. It will even give me all three low power warnings
WITH the power adapter plugged in. Then I have to put it to sleep.
My first thought was "the battery"--I was going to buy one anyway so I
got one from Apple and loaded it in--same problem. Then I thought,
"the modem?" so I took it out on Wednesday--same problem. I got a full
charge into it and twenty minutes later, it wanted to sleep--all I was
playing was solitaire with the HD spun down. I had Edison fired up and
watched the voltage drop from about 7.5 to 5.9 in those twenty minutes.
Any thoughts? I'm taking it back to the dealer next week if I can't come
up with something else.
Thanks much!!
I can't speak as an authority on printing and fonts, but I've
got a couple of suggestions:
First, try printing with background printing turned off. I
this works OK, assign PrintMonitor a larger memory partition
and try again (with background printing on, of course).
Experiment until you find a memory setting that's just enough
to do the job.
Keep in mind that if you try to print a TT version of a font
that's in your IIg's ROM, you'll get the Postscript version
instead, which may look a little different. Also, when
printing fonts for which you only have bitmaps, it wouldn't
hurt to turn off font substitution.
I'll assume you're using system 7.0X. If you've got 7.1, you
need to hack ATM 2.03 or get ATM 3.0 (although your use of
CarpetBag may eliminate the need to upgrade).
I don't have a IIg, but I have no problems printing (lots of) type 1,
TT, or just bitmaps in the background on a Personal LW NT
(with a IIsi, 7.01 tuned)
Hope this helps.
I just thought I'd throw this out on the table and see what you all think.
I often download text files for reference and usually have to save them in
the format of a more sophisticated word processor so I can use the FIND
wonderful to have a slightly enhanced version of TeachText that could look
for a string of characters. This way, you could find out right away if the
file contained something you needed and go right to it. If I could have
just one additional feature in TeachText and no others, ever, I'd want the
Subject: SE\30 problems
Hello out there in vax land. About a year ago, I became the proud owner of a
Mac SE/30 with a 40 Meg internal hard drive. Several of my brother's programs
(UMS, MacSki, etc...) for and earlier Mac (one of the originals, running
system
4 or 5 I believe) worked perfectly for about 5 months. I had and still have
virus detection installed at startup(originally SAM II, now Disenfect 4.0),
so a virus is not my concern. However, after the five month mark, programs
ran flawlessly before began to refuse to boot. Memory limitations were cited
as the reason. This came as a shock to me, as I only had about 8megs of
material in storage, which should leave at least 30 free. If any of my
programs needed over 30 megs, I would be surprised. I took the computer in,
and was told there was nothing wrong, just a few missing files, which were
replaced. Nevertheless, my SE/30 still complains of insufficient memory when
executing certain programs. I have tried adjusting the RAM cache, eliminating
items such as Soundmaster, and even trashed almost everything nonessential to
operation, but the computer is strapped for memory. You, noble Mac users, are
my last, best hope. Can somebody tell me (in layman's terms, please) what I
can do to eliminate this frustrating glitch? As a side note, I do have
Hypercard installed on the HD, but even without Hypercard, the memory shortage
persists. Send responses to RLauer on the email, or post it here, as I have
taken to scanning the mac bulletins in search of my answer. Your help is much
appreciated, and I swear I'll name a child after you if you solve my problem.
Liam Breck has been doing a super job keeping Apple pushed on this.
He has gathered reports from me and many others reporting problems
with mice manufactured in Malaysia. (No kidding!). He's right on.
We have several sticky mice (all Malaysia). When we change them out
for mice manufactured in other countries, the problems go away. This
appears to be machine independant.
Liam recently sent an update to a number of us who reported problems
with sticky mice. In part he said,
In true Apple responsiveness, the experts in Cupertino are slowly looking
into this. (They got your money already--don't they?). I suggest you
send a report to Liam at breck@umvlsi.ecs.umass.edu.
Maybe we call all send our mice C.O.D. to Cupertino. They would refuse
them, but it would make good copy for Mac The Knife!
We also have a second phone line for a teenage daughter and son. The son
Subject: Whining noise on LC
I sent a message to the poster of the original
query (sorry, I've forgotten who you are), but
the information doesn't seem to have reached
the digest yet, so here's my 2p worth...
I have had two Mac LCs, one a 4/40 6.07, and
more recently a 10/40 7.01 FPU, and both have
suffered from this whining noise problem.
The whining noise comes from the SPEAKER; if
you start up the Mac with a pair of headphones
plugged into the audio socket, both the startup
tone and the whining noise are audible through
the 'phones (and not through the speaker, as this
is disconnected when there is a headphone jack in
the audio out port). Through headphones, you can
hear also that the whining noise has a substantial
high frequency component, suggesting that some
horrible digital noise is breaking through onto
the audio circuitry.
The whining noise also seems only to occur when
the Mac has been left in a cold room, say
overnight, and is then starting up from cold. As
the machine warms up the noise then fades.
As others have mentioned, the noise doesn't seem
to have any affect on the stability or the
performance of the machine. It is just somewhat
unsettling for your PC-using colleagues to hear
a noise like a whistling wind when you start up your
LC in the morning. I just tell them it's the latest
toy I downloaded from somewhere...
Back in the dark ages (January 5) Jonathan Brecher wrote to tell y'all
about a freeware extension at mac.archive.umich.edu called wizzyfonts
that'd show font names in a fonts menu in their own font styles.
I was intrigued. I looked into the extension today. Nothing like a three-
day weekend occasioned by a Friday snow in these parts (Miz Scarlett!
Someone said the word "snowflake" in western Tennessee!) to free up a bit
of time from the day job.
I don't think wizzyfonts0.5.cpt.hqx will be added to my bag of tricks.
When I invoked the fonts menu in MacWrite II, wizzy did indeed list each
available font in its own style. To excess. The last two (I only keep the
ones that're built into my LaserWriter) overstepped the bounds of the
drop-down menu box. And stayed. A rich visual experience, as my Art Ed
wife would say.
I suspect that's partly why wizzy is at the 0.5 version. I'll stick with
Suitcase II for the time being, thank you.
